Welcome note

Dear colleagues,

217It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Second NALAS International Municipal Fair, NEXPO 2013, to be held in the beautiful Adriatic Cities of Rijeka and Opatija, in the Republic of Croatia.

Under the motto: "Where Ideas Come to Meet", NEXPO will bring together local governments and businesses from South-East Europe and beyond.

I am happy to recall on the success of NEXPO 2011, in Sarajevo. It was a remarkable event for local governments from SEE, bringing hundreds of Mayors and exhibitors and thousands of visitors, that had the opportunity to attend 9 Conferences and Workshops and many side events. We expect even bigger success this year.

The topic of NEXPO 2013 is EU Integration. During a one-day conference, participants will discuss important topics for the future of the Region. As an added value, NEXPO 2013 will also provide opportunities for local governments to meet representatives of the business sector, present their ideas and attract potential investors for their projects in energy efficiency and renewable energies.

For my distinguished Mayor colleagues, NEXPO is a great opportunity to: present their Municipality, meet new people, learn new things, exchange experiences and best practices. Also, NEXPO might bring future benefits for your Municipality. You will be able to: present your Municipality potentials, competitive advantages, investment projects, meet potential investors, establish partnerships and get in touch with potential donors.

Additionally, NEXPO opens its doors for the potential investors: businesses, banks, vendors of municipal services. They will be able to meet over 300 Mayors from SEE and beyond, learn about local governments and their needs, get in touch with potential municipal partners, present their business, exchange experiences and establish partnerships.

I hereby extend our invitation for your participation at NEXPO 2013, in Croatia. I believe that it will be a unique and enriching experience for you and your employees and moreover, that it will bring concrete benefits for your Municipality and business.

Dear guests and participant to NEXPO 2013,

Mr. Vojko Obersnel, Mayor of Rijeka, CroatiaAs Mayor of the City of Rijeka and President of the Association of Cities of the Republic of Croatia,  it is my great pleasure to welcome you to our city.  Hosting such a timely event focusing on EU integration and bringing together respected officials and high ranked professionals from both the public and private sector is a great honour, especially in the light of the  recent Croatian accession to the European Union. I'd like to commend NALAS for the initiative, as well as to express appreciation for our prospective partnership and for the opportunity to host this event.

Rijeka has long before been a part of Europe and has always been distinctive for its openness, innovation, multiculturalism and hospitality. I believe  it is the perfect location for hosting this important event and for sharing experience of success and accession challenges among the ones still waiting on the road towards EU integration. I am even more happy to welcome numerous representatives of local authorities with whom,  I believe,  I share the same attitudes toward the need for further promotion of decentralisation and  the role of local government in the EU integration.

Creating opportunities for a better life quality of citizens is one of the main goals of local authorities.  NEXPO Municipal Fair, with main topics concerning Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energies, will provide  practical solutions for improving green programs and establish partnership between private and public sector, fostering ideas that will not only positively impact our cities and the region but the whole Europe.

I am sure that your coming to Rijeka will  make a strong impact. So once more I wish you a warm welcome and a pleasant stay in our city!

Vojko Obersnel
Mayor of the City of Rijeka

Dear colleagues and friends,

Ivo Dujmić, Mayor of OpatijaIt is my great pleasure to welcome you in Opatija, a Mediterranean town with Central European charm, which numerous business people, scientists and tourists have chosen as their favourite destination.

Opatija is recognized as a cradle of Croatian tourism nowadays and is famous for its history, culture, architectures, well-tended parks and gardens, healthy air and especially the rehabilitation centre named Thalassotherapia.

I'll take this opportunity to introduce briefly those of you who are visiting Opatija for the first time with a fact that Opatija was an abbey once,  developed as a touristic town later on. „Fine de siècle“ was  the golden period in creating Opatija's image as a health resort. At that time, Opatija became a second home for the members of Habsburg royal family, who liked to spend some time off from royal affairs while resting here.

The town is also renowned for its 12 km-long Lungomare coastal promenade, numerous bathing spots and splendid fountains, which all make a perfect setting for villas and hotels that can accommodate over 6,000 visitors. Opatija can today satisfy the needs of even the most demanding guests. Opatija is a mixture of a Mediterranean climate and middle Europe elegancy in architecture and still attractive to the public and visitors.

Thanks to the care and attention of the people who live and work here, Opatija is becoming more and more beautiful each day. Today, Opatija proudly holds the title of a ''Child-friendly city'' and a ''Healthy town'', and also is a winner of the silver award Entente Florale Europe, as well as the Blue Flower award from the Croatian National Tourist Board.

I wish you a pleasant stay in Opatija.image001

Yours faithfully,
Ivo Dujmić
Mayor of Opatija

It was important for me to come, to share and talk about issues like e-governance, where I learned was that it is important to build capacities of authorities at local levels before we ask the national level to support them. Additionally, before we transform our local governments into e-governments, there is a need for working first on issues like education, internet access and also access to electricity.”
